AFTER a hiatus lasting nearly a decade, the Battle of the Netters 2025 competition kicked off at the National Netball Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.
It’s the first recent netball tournament to convene netball associations from around the country in a tournament that saw hundreds of netball players, making up 42 teams, take to the four netball courts for free-spirited competition.
The associations include the Suva, Tailevu, Naitasiri South, Fiji Secondary Schools, Nadi, Lautoka, Tavua, Vatukaloko, Nanukuloa, Labasa, Tailevu, and Savusavu associations.
The tournament has been eyed as a platform on which players can showcase their talent at a national level.
Competition at the two-day meet unfolded in five grades for two divisions: under 15 women, under 18 women, open women, under 23 men and open men.
The tournament is hosted in the capital city with the support of its sponsors Newworld IGA and Goodman Fielder, whose support has been commended by the tournament’s organising committee.
Under their sponsorship, the organisers were able to cater for the use of the netball centre, transport teams to the capital from around the country and also pay for their way back.
The tournament was launched at the VIP Lounge of the Damodar City Aquatic Centre on Thursday with representatives from both sponsors present.
Other sponsors that have come on board to sponsor the tournament include SportsWorld Fiji, Hot Bread Kitchen, CJ Patel, ANZ Bank and MaiTV.
The competition lead, Alumeci Sachs thanked the sponsors for their backing of the two-day tournament.
She also thanked the heads of the various districts for their commitment and presence at the event while also thanking the Battle of the Netters organising committee for their dedication, effort and sacrifices made.
