Nephew in court for uncle’s death

A 31-year-old accused of causing the death of his uncle, a retired military officer, has opted to be represented by the Legal Aid Commission.

Petaia Taqaiwai Sematanagauna, who is self-employed, made his first appearance before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne at the Suva Magistrate’s Court last week.

Charged with a count of murder, Mr Sematanagauna is alleged to have committed the offence at their home in Lami on September 14, 2025.

The victim, who was 57, died upon arrival at the hospital.

The accused will reappear before Mr Somaratne on October 10 to extend his remand warrant, and the matter will be called at the High Court in Suva on October 17.
