The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that the Navua Hospital Inpatient and Birthing Unit is currently closed due to concerns over the building’s structural integrity.
According to the Ministry, the issues were first identified by hospital staff in May this year, prompting a decision to close the affected building to allow for infrastructure assessments and necessary renovation works.
As an interim measure, maternity services have been relocated to the Administration Block within the outpatient building, where services continue to be provided.
Patients requiring ongoing inpatient care and specialist obstetric services are being referred to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital.
The Ministry said these changes have been communicated to members of the Navua community, who are aware of the temporary adjustments to health services.
On average, Navua Hospital records about 15 deliveries per month. Since the changes were implemented, a total of 289 patients have been successfully stabilised, admitted, transferred, or discharged.
The Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Public Works and other partners to assess and address the required repairs.
Further engineering assessments are expected in the coming weeks to determine the full scope of work needed to restore the hospital to full operation.
