Dedication and hard work paid off for the Navosa Rugby side as they opened their Vodafone Vanua Cup campaign with a solid 27-17 victory over Yasawa at Lawaqa Park on Friday.
The men from the highlands showcased grit and determination throughout the 80 minutes, outmuscling Yasawa with their physical style and discipline in both attack and defence.
Navosa’s structured play and fitness gave them the edge in crucial moments, sealing the win in front of their vocal supporters.
Navosa Rugby president Levi Nayacalevu praised the team’s performance, saying the win was a reward for the players’ commitment during preparations.
“These are all our local talents, all our boys from the villages of Navosa. They were camping at Keasi in preparation for this tournament. It was a good game, a good start for us,” he said.
The victory marks an encouraging beginning for Navosa as they set their sights on a strong run in this year’s competition.
In other round one results Cakaudrove defeated Bua 22-9, Tavua upset Northland 24-20, Kadavu upset Nasinu 21-8 and Namosi beat Serua 50-35.
Round two of the Vanua Cup will be held this weekend.
The winner of the competition will earn direct qualification to the Skipper Cup next year.
