Four Fijian Navy officers obtained their Certificate of Completion from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime  Maritime Domain Awareness Award ceremony in Suva yesterday.

UN resident coordinator Sanaka Samarasinha said the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) referred to the collection, fusion, and analysis of maritime information to generate a comprehensive maritime surface picture.

“Strengthening MDA capability enhances the capability of littoral states to respond to safety and security imperatives at sea,” Mr Samarasinha said.

Acting Commander Fiji Navy Marika Vosawale said Fiji Navy relied heavily on the extraction of its analytical information to provide them with refined data in the execution of their duties and responsibilities with regards to the security and safety of the Fijian people, resources within their jurisdiction and in the region.

“I would like to acknowledge the United Nations (UN) Office on Drugs and Crime for facilitating this two weeks online training program, which not only serves as professional development and capacity building for respective officers but also aids in the ongoing battle against Maritime Crime in Fiji,” Mr Vosawale said.
