In less than a week since her appointment, Laijipa Naulivou has been terminated as the Director of Rugby by the Fiji Rugby Union Board of Directors.
This comes after Naulivou shared her personal opinion regarding lesbianism in the national women’s teams on Tuesday.
Her comments had since gained much attention from the public and so too from the FRU Board.
The FRU had yesterday decided in alignment with World Rugby’s core values of discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity to terminate her appointment even though she had resigned.
In a media release, the FRU stated, “The Fiji Rakavi Football Union Ltd (FRU) is committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, integrity, and accountability.
“The Board determined that a firm stance was necessary to reinforce its commitment to upholding professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of Fiji Rugby.”
It went on to say that the FRU categorically rejected any form of discrimination.
“The views expressed by Laijipa Naulivou are her personal opinions and do not reflect the official position of FRU.
“Our women’s team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.
“FRU remains steadfast in ensuring a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all the Fiji Rugby Vuvale, regardless of gender, background, or identity,” the statement read.
A new appointment will be made in due course through a rigorous and transparent selection process.
