SUSPENDED Fiji Corrections Service acting commissioner Sevuloni Naucukidi is a free man after being acquitted of criminal intimidation by the Suva Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The matter had been set for trial before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne on Wednesday. However, the prosecution moved to withdraw the charge following what it called “genuine reconciliation” between Mr Naucukidi and the complainant.
Prosecutor Sadaf Shameem told the court the victim had been asked several times to reconsider but maintained his decision to discontinue. When queried on the possibility of recharging Mr Naucukidi, she said it was “very slim”.
Defence lawyer Barbara Malimali argued the case should conclude with finality, noting her client had already suffered reputational damage, financial strain, and emotional distress after being dismissed over allegations he threatened a staff member in July 2025.
She submitted that the interests of justice favoured an acquittal under Section 169(2)(b)(i) of the Criminal Procedure Act, rather than a withdrawal of charges, as the possibility of recharging, however slim, left her client in ongoing uncertainty.
Outside court, Ms Malimali said the case was a reminder of the serious consequences of allegations, particularly against public officials.
The State has 28 days to appeal.
