FIJI being one of the countries situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire (also known as the Rim of Fire) is likely to experience earthquake and tsunami incidents.
As it is important to learn about different natural disasters and equally crucial to know what to do when such disasters occur.
One that is often stressed about in Fiji is being prepared for tsunami warnings.
It is vital to know what to do in case of a tsunami, so being aware and conscious to responsive drills and actual warnings are always important.
This is why tsunami evacuation simulation exercises are vital. Such drills build preparedness and awareness among coastal communities.
Last week, a tsunami evacuation simulation exercise was conducted as part of national disaster awareness week.
Not only were national disaster representatives from government and organisations present at the event, school students also participated.
Most of the schools invited were coastal schools in Suva.
Chief guest at the event was the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere who was accompanied by the Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Minister, Sakiasi Ditoka.
Ratu Wiliame spoke strongly on the importance of tsunami drills to an island country like Fiji.
“Tsunami drills are not just another routine exercise; they are about life and ensuring the safety and well-being of our entire school community,” he said.
“Your willingness to engage, your attentiveness, and your cooperation have demonstrated your commitment to your safety and the safety of your fellow students and teachers.
“The lessons we have practiced today can make all the difference in ensuring your safety.
“I would like to extend a special thank you to the NDMO, police, other key government agencies, and teachers who have guided us through this drill.
“You play a vital role in imparting knowledge, and today, you have helped us acquire essential life-saving skills.
“Remember, the knowledge and skills gained from today’s drill do not just stay within these school walls; they extend to our homes and communities.
“As students, you are taking a proactive step in building a safer future, not only for yourselves but also for your families and neighbours.”
Key instructions also highlighted by the President in a Government statement included evacuation routes, the importance of staying away from the coastline and the practicing of tsunami drills.
National Disaster Management Office director Vasiti Soko in the statement urged all Fijians to be more attentive to the tsunami siren during the tsunami drill.
Ms Soko commended and thanked all stakeholders, including partners, for their hard work and contribution.
Participating schools and organisations according to Government were required to test their
responsiveness to tsunami warnings from authorities on radio, television, and through community alerts
