Natabua High School and Jasper Williams High School were named champions in the overall boys and girls divisions at the end of the two-day Coca-Cola Lautoka Zone at Churchill Park yesterday.
Natabua collected 33 gold, 14 silver, and six bronze as overall winners for the boys while Central Lautoka College followed in second place with eight gold, nine silver, and 11 bronze, leaving Tilak High School in third with six silver, six gold, and seven bronze.
In the girl’s division, Jasper bagged 25 gold, 18 silver, and 14 bronze while Natabua followed with 13 gold, nine silver, and six bronze.
Yasawa North College settled for third with three gold, one silver, and one bronze.
Zone vice-president Avinesh Chand said smaller schools in the competition proved their worth and stood up to bigger teams, making the competition an exciting one.
“There was a lot of strong competition, especially from smaller schools like Yasawa North College who came third in the overall girl’s division,” he said.
Chand said he was surprised to see the pavilions at Churchill Park packed with fans and supporters during the competition.
“The whole place was packed and to see such a turnout is very encouraging, so we want to thank all those who came out as well.”
Schools will now prepare for the Coca-Cola Games National Championship at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on May 2-4.
