FIJI’S very own top commentator Satish Narain is about to create a new legacy at the HSBC World SVNS Series.
Narain has been selected as one of the four lead commentators for the Perth 7s in Australia next weekend.
A discussion that happened one year ago with World Rugby commentator Karl Te Nana has finally been fulfilled as Narain turns over a new page in his commentary career.
“We commentated together at the Coral Coast 7s last year and he did a few games with me and I think he must’ve seen something that impressed him. The first opportunity came in the Pacific Nations Cup, they invited me to go do after-match interviews and that’s how they got me in.
“About three months ago, one night I got a message from him asking me if I’m free on those dates for Perth 7s and I said that I am free. He said that they wanted to get me on board into the International Commentary Feed so that’s how it started,” the former journalist stated.
A man usually full of fancy words and descriptions during commentary was too stunned to speak when he got the news.
“I was lost for words. I never thought that I would get that kind of opportunity ever although I always dreamed big and I dreamt that one day I will be commentating at a higher level. Everything happens in God’s time, I believe in that,” he said.
Commentary was always something that Narain was passionate about and it goes back to his early teen years.
“My schoolmates have known that I would do mock commentaries from when I was 11 or 12 years old so I always had that fire in me. Later I joined FM 96 and the opportunity was presented to me, I took it with both hands and I am still working hard to this day.
“It’s so good to see that my own colleagues that I work with are so excited, it means a lot for them that one of their own is going to do something on the world stage. The hardest part is in front of me next week,” Narain added.
The Perth 7s is scheduled for January 24-26.
