Naqelevuki back

STAR hit man Sireli Naqelevuki is expected to play for Narere club Uluinakau in the $20,000 Bayleys Coral Coast 7s tournament next week.

The former Flying Fijians utility back has been training with the Maleli Kolinivala-coached side since last month.

“Our selection for the 12-member squad will be finalised tomorrow (today),” Uluinakau Rugby Club’s secretary Eliki Kaisuva said.

“Naqelevuki has been training with us since last month. When he came to Fiji, he was injured and recovering. He has been playing well but it’s a big difference when a player transfers to 7s from 15s rugby.”

Naqelevuki was a key member of Waisale Serevi’s historic national 7s team that won the then IRB Sevens World Series title in 2006. The 35-year-old played for Stormers in Super Rugby and joined Exeter Chiefs for the Guinness Premiership in England. He has played eight international Tests for the Flying Fijians.

Kaisuva said URC had won four local 7s tournaments in the past two months.

He said captain Waisea Koroi, who plays centre, has been in top form recently.

After playing club rugby in the Naitasiri and Northland rugby unions, URC is eyeing a move to join the recently revived Nasinu Rugby Union.

“URC is based in Narere. We started playing in Northland for two seasons and last season, we joined Naitasiri.

This year, we’re trying to move to Nasinu because it will be easier for us to go to Valelevu or Nadera grounds for games,” he said.

URC is looking for sponsors.
