MINISTER for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa has called on Suva residents to “take pride in Suva City” as the 2025 Hibiscus Festival officially kicked off last night.

Opening the week-long celebration, Mr Nalumisa stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and respectful behaviour throughout the festivities, urging all participants and visitors to be mindful of their role in keeping Suva safe, welcoming, and beautiful.

“As we look forward to the week of the festivities, I want to stress two important priorities for us all: safety and cleanliness,” Mr Nalumisa said.

He noted that the Suva City Council has partnered with the Fiji Police Force, National Fire Authority, St John’s Ambulance, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of all festivalgoers.

Additional emergency services will also be on standby throughout the event.

“Your safety, and that of your families, is our highest concern.

“A clean Suva is a proud Suva.

“We call on every vendor, visitor, and citizen to join us in keeping our city beautiful during this festival and beyond.”

Highlighting the significance of the Hibiscus Festival in Suva’s cultural landscape, the minister described it as more than just a carnival.

“It is a celebration of who we are, our diversity, our creativity, and our resilience.

“It is where families come together, where businesses thrive, and where Suva shines as the beating heart of Fiji.”

This year’s festival also aligns with key social initiatives, including the social challenges event and youth empowerment programs, further reinforcing the event’s community-focused mission.

“These activities remind us that the festival is about empowering our young people, providing them with opportunities to showcase their skills, and engaging them in meaningful dialogue about the challenges we face as a society.”

The Hibiscus Festival 2025 continues throughout the week, with themed nights dedicated to youth, cultural diversity, and community celebration, culminating in the crowning of this year’s Hibiscus Queen next Saturday.
