THE Vulaga Camakau Canoe Race on Vulaga Island in the Lau Group concluded in a thrilling and unforgettable manner over the weekend.
The competition, featuring a three-leg sprint from start to finish, saw cheers echoing across the waters as four villages supported their racing crews.
The shifting winds and passing rain added to the challenge, testing the strength, skill, and teamwork of each crew.
Team Naividamu emerged victorious, with team member Adoni Cakacaka claiming first place in the event.
Cakacaka, who had also finished first in the last race held in 2011, expressed his excitement at being part of the event’s revival.
He emphasised the importance of preserving and passing on traditional canoe-sailing knowledge.
Participation in the competition was not new to Cakacaka, who credited his familiarity with the location and wind conditions for his success.
“Participation in the competition is not new to me; I also took part in the last race. I’m also thankful for having the event here at Muanaicake and Muanaira. I am not new to the place, and I am familiar with the wind.”
He acknowledged the skill and competitiveness of his fellow racers on the water, noting that securing victory was no easy feat.
The long-awaited return of the traditional race after 15 years was made possible through the support of the Coalition Government, particularly the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and the Ministry of Information.
This cultural initiative aimed to promote and celebrate Fijian culture, traditions, and indigenous skills.
