THE newly-formed Naitasiri South Netball Team is preparing itself diligently for the revived Netball Inter-District Competition, which takes place next week.
The association enters the tournament alongside established ones such as Suva Netball Association and its president, Viliame Naisake said his association was thankful to be part of the tournament.
“We are thankful for the opportunity to be part of this historic revival. The inclusion of new associations like ours shows the growth of netball in Fiji and creates a platform for our young and upcoming players,” Naisake said.
The association has gathered players from Naselai in Rewa, Nakasi, Navua and surrounding areas for training at the Nasinu Multipurpose Court.
They are four teams participating for the association, which are the under-15 girls, under-18 girls, open women and open mens.
“Most of our players are primary and high school students, school leavers, unemployed mothers and youths from informal settlements in Nasinu,” he said.
“This program is more than just netball, it’s about keeping our young people engaged, building discipline and giving them a sense of purpose.”
Two players under strict bail conditions are also part of the team and have shown their steadfast commitment to training through which they have benefitted from spiritual mentoring and guidance offered.
He also voiced a call of support for the wider community and the team’s stakeholders to back the team in their journey for the tournament.
“Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these players. Netball has become a tool of empowerment, character building, and unity.
“With the right support, we can give these young athletes the opportunities they deserve, both on and off the court.”
Meanwhile, the Battle of the Netters tournament takes place next week from September 26-27.
