In a swift move ahead of the 2026 McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, Waisea Nacuqu has been named as the replacement for Gillies Kaka in the McDonald’s Mike Friday Select 7s team.

Kaka’s withdrawal was confirmed on medical grounds after doctors advised he undergo surgery, ruling him out of the tournament.

The news comes as a blow to the squad, with Kaka being a key player known for his skill and commitment. Head Coach Mike Friday expressed his disappointment but stressed the importance of Kaka’s health and recovery.

“Gillies is a tremendous competitor and a valued member of the squad. While we’re disappointed, he won’t be with us on the field, his health comes first, and we wish him a smooth recovery,” Friday said.

Replacing Kaka is no small task, but Nacuqu’s inclusion brings a fresh burst of pace and proven try-scoring prowess to the lineup.

Renowned for his electrifying speed and experience on the international sevens stage, Nacuqu is expected to maintain the high tempo, attacking style the Select 7s are known for.

“Waisea is a proven match-winner at the highest level of the game,” said Friday.

“His speed, instincts and professionalism make him an ideal fit for this group, and we’re excited to have him join the squad.”

The full Mike Friday Select 7s squad now includes a strong mix of talent from Fiji, Ireland, Wales, and the USA, featuring players like Harry McNulty (Ireland), Perry Baker (USA), and Fiji’s own Jerry Tuwai and Semi Kunatani.

Tournament organisers and the team have extended their best wishes to Kaka as he focuses on his medical treatment and recovery.
