The Fiji Sports Council’s Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s tournament has been declared a major success after 24 rugby 7s teams from across the Yasawa Group of Islands gathered for two thrilling days of competition at the Ratu Luke Memorial School ground in Nacula.

Vitiroofing FSC Grassroots Fiji 7s were crowned champions in the final defeating Volivolitakelo 21-0.

The Yasawa leg, which featured open-grade rugby, drew widespread community support, with the pristine backdrop of the islands providing a vibrant setting for grassroots talent to shine.

Teams travelled from various villages across the group to take part, showcasing skill, passion, and the enduring love of rugby in the region.

Fiji Sports Council communications officer, Emosi Lasaqa explained a key highlight of this year’s event was the introduction of netball, which replaced volleyball in the tournament lineup.

“The change was warmly welcomed, particularly by female athletes, with 12 netball teams from the Yasawa group and one team from Suva competing in a spirited contest that added a new layer of excitement and inclusivity to the program,” said Lasaqa.

The tournament was further uplifted by the presence of the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, who officially launched the Yasawa Netball Association on Saturday.

“His visit underlined the Ministry’s continued support for rural sports development and the empowerment of women through sport.

“Adding to the success of the event was the strong partnership and logistical support provided by South Sea Cruises, Awesome Adventures Fiji, and Blue Lagoon Beach Resort.

“Their involvement ensured the smooth transport and accommodation of teams and officials, greatly enhancing the overall experience for participants and spectators alike.”

Fiji Sports Council Acting CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure commended the community and partners for their commitment to nurturing grassroots sports in remote areas.
