A MYSTERY resort in Fiji has been named one of the world’s top 15 memorable accommodations even though Investment Fiji and the Ministry of Tourism claim the resort is not in operation.
Ranking 11 in the world for its underwater suites, the supposed multi-million dollar Poseidon Undersea Resort (Fiji) was noted recently by CNN for its 24 underwater suites.
The news agency reported the resort dropped 40 feet below the surface of the Fijian lagoon and had all the comforts of a five-star hotel.
“Guests are invited to interact with the surroundings – at the push of a button the fish are fed and the flip of a switch turns on sparkling underwater lights,” CNN reported.
It said the resort charged $US15,000 ($F27,674) per person for the one-week package, which included transportation, two nights in an underwater suite, scuba diving and wine tasting.
It said the resort competed with an underwater hotel at the bottom of the Emerald Lagoon in Florida, Das Park Hotel in Austria in a concrete sewer pipe on the banks of the River Danube, glass igloo in northern Finland and a four-star boutique cave-hotel in Italy.
The resort was said to have opened for reservations in 2009 and was believed to be located on a private island in Fiji.
This claim was refuted by Investment Fiji, who said the resort was not registered in its overseas investment portfolio.
Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary Elizabeth Powell said they were aware of the supposed undersea resort but confirmed it was “definitely not in operation”.
“They have a website, which is very interesting, but as far as I know there has not been any construction and there is certainly no resort of that kind in existence at this time. They have been quite successful in getting publicity but there are no plans that the ministry is aware of for the construction of the resort,” she said yesterday.
Former Investment Fiji CEO Ravuni Uluilakeba confirmed earlier they were not aware of the resort’s application.
