POLICE launched a search operation last week after a mysterious container was spotted drifting at sea by Veidrala villagers in Ra Province.
Villagers had reported seeing a flickering light atop the container that possibly indicated an active GPS device.
The container — the contents of which remain unknown — was seen by a Veidrala village fisherman, who also reported the sighting of speed boats out at sea.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed there was a search conducted in waters off the village.
She said divers from the Police Mobile Force were deployed to search for the container but could not locate it.
The ocean around Fiji has been identified as a possible transit point for drugs, with drugs from the USA and Latin America dropped off at sea and GPS devices picked up by criminal syndicates.
