Members of the Muslim community living along the Suva-Nausori corridor gathered at the Rishikul Sanatan College hall in Valelevu, Nasinu to celebrate Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday yesterday.
Celebrated annually on October 2, it is commemorated by Muslims in Fiji on 12 Rabi’ al-awwal of the Islamic calendar.
Over 100 people attended the function which was organised by the Sunni Islamic Association Qadri Masjid, Abu-Bakr Siddiq Foundation and Ahlus Sunnah Rizwi Foundation.
Abu-Bakr Siddiq Foundation general secretary Azim Ud Deam said the day marked an important day in the Islamic calendar and community.
“Prophet Mohammed taught us there is equality, no inferiority and he taught us to look after the poor and give to charity,” he said.
“People from all backgrounds are gathered here today, we have a huge group, and we thank the Government of the day for granting us this holiday.”
He thanked the Fiji Police Force for supervising the march from Valelevu Islamic Centre to Rishikul Sanatan College.
The group later distributed free chicken palau to members of the public at the Suva Bus Stand to end the celebration.
