The Muslim community in Fiji celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr yesterday, marked after the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan.
In his message to the Muslim community, Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad said the celebration reinforced the values of respect, tolerance, unity, goodwill and peace.
This, he said, was paramount for a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural nation like Fiji. He also said the holy month of Ramadan and celebration of Eid was significant.
“It is the culmination of practice of self-discipline, increased prayers, spiritual development and charity towards all, especially our underprivileged and less fortunate,” he said.
“Fasting is an act of both seeking purification and making sacrifice for the blessings of the almighty for peace, unity, and prosperity. Eid is a celebration about seeking righteousness, taking the solemn pledge to lead a righteous life of truth, justice, and sacrifice for the greater good.”
He also acknowledged the important contribution made by the Muslim community towards the development of Fiji.
Prof Prasad said they also remembered pioneer leaders of the Islamic faith who always “put national interest above anything else, including personal interest, for the progress of our nation”.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka also extended his best wishes to the Muslim community in Fiji and abroad.
“We must continue to have faith in each other and reflect and practice the true purpose of Eid-ul-Fitr, where the interest of our most vulnerable families and communities must remain paramount,” he said.
