A PEACEFUL morning turned into a nightmare at Malolo in Nadi yesterday as 54-year-old taxidriver Latchman allegedly killed his wife Artika Kumari before taking his own life.

The shocking incident occurred at the couple’s home, leaving the community and their families devastated.

According to Latchman’s twin brother Ram, who lives in a flat next door, the couple’s daughter had run to him for help when the tragedy happened.

“I was in my flat when their daughter came running and said her dad had locked the door with both of them inside,” Mr Ram said.

“The radio was turned up loud and we tried to break down the door. When we finally got in, we found Artika dead and Latchman had hung himself, although he was still alive. He died later in hospital.”

Artika’s sister Aska Kumari said the police were called to their home just two days before the incident following a heated argument.

“They started fighting on Wednesday. Their daughter had run to her uncle for help and they called the police. They took Latchman into custody but he was released on Thursday afternoon,” Ms Kumari said.

“My sister told me the police instructed them to stay in the same house, but sleep in separate rooms while waiting for their court case.”

Ms Kumari was at her workplace when she received the call yesterday.

“I thought it was just another fight until they told me my sister was no more. We still can’t believe it.

“Artika will be remembered as a kind-hearted, caring, loving and very humble person, always smiling.”
