Swire Shipping Fijian Drua flyhalf Caleb Muntz is back training with the team after sustaining a knee injury at the Rugby World Cup in France playing for the Flying Fijians side.

Muntz, who is still going through rehabilitation, said the injury he sustained during a training session in France was serious.

“It was a pretty serious knee injury,” the 24-year-old said.

“Bit of a freak accident unfortunately, but it’s part of the game. I had surgery in France pretty quickly after so it’s quite good to get the ball rolling.

“About three to four months now post-surgery and it’s going good. Haven’t had any major setbacks. It is feeling strong and giving me a lot of confidence.”

Muntz was named in the Fijian Drua squad for the 2022 Super Rugby Pacific season.

He had previously represented the Drua in the 2019 National Rugby Championship.

“It was an awesome year for me. Coming into the year, last year’s pre-season, I thought there was a really big vibe especially with the Fijian Drua about how we could perform in the competition.

“There is a lot more belief among ourselves,” he said.

The former Hamilton Boys’ High School student was part of the Fijian under-20 team in 2018 and 2019, played an unofficial game for Fiji against the Barbarians in 2019, before making his official debut for the senior team against Tonga earlier this year.

“I have got to experience a lot. Got injured last season, this season as well. I think in a way it is good that this has happened to me.

“Not too big of a deal, I know how to deal with it.

“You kind of get excited looking at the progress at have a thought of coming back but you have to tell yourself that I am not able to play but I am gearing myself to be able to play again.”

While Muntz is back training with the Drua, he added he won’t be part of any games until the mid-season or towards the end of the season.

Muntz was born in Huntly, New Zealand to a Maori mother and a father of Fijian and European descent.

He began playing rugby at the age of four in nearby Hamilton, where he grew up, and later represented Hamilton Boys’ High School.

He qualifies to play for Fiji through his paternal grandmother, who is from Savusavu and paternal grandfather, who is from Rewa.
