The competition in the Suva Marathon is intensifying as the years go by, according to former Fiji middle-distance runner Isireli Naikelekelevesi.

Having represented Fiji in the Summer Olympics in 1996, 2000, and 2004, as well as in various South Pacific Games, Naikelekelevesi acknowledges the remarkable growth of the Suva Marathon over the years.

He commended the organisers for their efforts in promoting a healthy lifestyle through monthly competitions.

“I think Suva Marathon has done a great job over the years and having a monthly competition, really is something great for the runners,” said Naikelekelevesi.

Naikelekelevesi believed that the increasing popularity of the Suva Marathon is beneficial not only for athletes but also for the general public.

He noted that the competition has been steadily expanding since its inception, with more participants joining each year.

In particular, he highlighted the success of the recent Namosi Marathon, which coincided with the Oceania Athletics Championship and attracted a large number of runners.

“It’s good for the general public to come and join for a run, it provides a healthy lifestyle, ever since Suva Marathon started it has grown, which is great to see.”

As one of the few long-distance runners in Fiji, Naikelekelevesi expressed his hope that young athletes, such as those who competed in the Coca-Cola Games, will take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Suva Marathon.

“I think the only long-distance runner we have right now it Yeshnil Karan, I think the kids from Coca Cola games they should make us of this Suva Marathon competition gives them a platform to gauge themselves out.

“We have 5km and 10km runs every month for Suva Marathon, so it’s a great opportunity for the athletes to come train, they don’t have to wait for first term to start training they can come train with us.”

Naikelekelevesi urged people to participate in the Suva Marathon 2025 and enjoy the event while contributing to a healthier and stronger Fiji.

He emphasised the importance of supporting local competitions like the Suva Marathon, which not only promote fitness and well-being but also serve as a platform for athletes to showcase their talents and improve their skills.

By coming together and participating in this event, individuals can help build a better future for themselves and their communities.

“To anyone who is thinking of joining Suva Marathon, come and support our local event, the organisation has supported a lot of local communities, for an example in Namosi, they have helped the school with renovations and contributed to other charitable work in Fiji, so it’s really amazing.”

The upcoming Suva Marathon promises to be an exciting event, with an anticipated increase in participants.

Naikelekelevesi invited everyone to join the competition and experience the benefits of promoting a healthy lifestyle through running.

He emphasised that the Suva Marathon also contributes to charitable causes in Fiji, such as supporting schools in Namosi, showcasing its commitment to giving back to the community.

Meanwhile the, the 2025 Suva Marathon event will take place on September 6.
