The Electoral Commission will determine the municipal election dates, says Local Government permanent secretary Seema Sharma.
However, during public consultations in Labasa on Thursday, she said that by the indications given, the elections would be held at the end of the year.
Ms Sharma said the 13 municipal elections would be conducted by the Fijian Elections Office.
“The Electoral Commission will issue the writ for the municipal elections,” she said.
Ms Sharma made the comments after she was asked by former Fiji Labour Party candidate Surendra Lal to confirm whether the municipality would be conducted this year.
In response, she said they were drawing up a formula to determine the many seats each municipality would receive in the upcoming election.
“We will be submitting this to the Electoral Commission and Fijian Elections Office.
“This will determine the number of councillors each municipality will have.”
Ms Sharma said the current electoral system would remain the same.
“The same system used for the national election will also be used for the municipal elections,” she said.
