ROBUST FIJI Water Flying Fijian prop forward Luke Tagi will run onto the Stade de Bordeaux field in France this Rugby World Cup without his hero and greatest rugby enthusiast, his late father
Luke Tagi Sr watching him from the stands.
Honouring a promise that was made, his mother Lina Grace will fly out to France next week to support their only son as he conquers the world’s best rugby teams with his no-holds barred rugby skills. Speaking to The Fiji Times, she said travelling more than 10,500 miles to witness her son play at the pinnacle of his rugby career would be the best way to honour her late husband’s last wishes.
“Luke is where he is today, he is achieving his rugby dreams because of the constant prayers and endless support of his father,” Grace said.
“Before Luke’s dad passed on a few months back, he had only one last wish – to ensure I continue supporting Luke’s rugby career and offer him the best parental advice even though he is away playing club rugby in France.
“I’m excited to be in France next week to cheer on my son and I am looking forward to it.”
On the field, the fierce tighthead prop is known for his ‘cool, calm and collected’ personality and his ability to secure a solid scrum even against the world’s best teams.
Grace, a businesswoman, said her son’s passion for the sport and commitment to excellence stemmed from how he was brought up with strong Christian values where he was taught
to conquer any trial by standing strong in his faith and always looking out for the needs of others.
“Luke loves to provide to those who need help and this is a characteristic my son is blessed with.
“We wish him and his brothers in the Flying Fijians side well in the Rugby World Cup.”
Luke, 26, carries with him the hopes of the people of Vione, Gau, and his maternal family from Nakorosule, Naitasiri.
