The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has warned that defamatory comments directed at the authority will be met with legal action, as it moved to clarify its role and recent public concerns within the maritime sector.

In a statement, MSAF said it respected the right of stakeholders to express their views but cautioned against false or damaging remarks.

“MSAF respects the right of all stakeholders to express their views, but defamatory remarks will be met with legal action,” the authority stated.

The regulator emphasised that its primary mandate remains the safety of life at sea and the protection of Fiji’s marine environment.

Addressing governance concerns, MSAF said appointments to its board and the Maritime Appeal Tribunal are carried out in accordance with relevant laws and public service procedures.

On regulatory oversight, the authority said it had strengthened audit and inspection programmes to ensure compliance across all operators.

“All regulatory actions are based strictly on technical assessments and compliance records. MSAF applies the law consistently across all operators,” the statement said.

MSAF added that it remains open to engagement with industry stakeholders, provided discussions are constructive and focused on addressing safety issues.

The authority also expressed confidence in its leadership and operational direction, noting that it continues to manage complex challenges while maintaining safety standards.

MSAF reiterated that all operators are expected to comply fully with legislated requirements, warning that enforcement action will be taken where breaches are identified.
