The interisland vessel Lomaiviti Princess 1 that developed engine problems while transporting passengers from Savusavu to Suva will undergo ‘necessary special survey protocols’ to determine what caused the malfunction.
Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji CEO Joeli Cawaki said the institution was ‘actively’ liaising with Goundar Shipping Limited, the owner of the interisland vessel, to address the incident.
He said it was imperative for the interisland vessel operator to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and crew members.
“… Every measure is being taken to address the situation effectively,” Mr Cawaki said, as he reassured the general public of their commitment to uphold maritime safety.

The Lomaiviti Princess 1 departed the Savusavu wharf on Vanua Levu at 3am yesterday, bound for Suva’s Narain Jetty.
The vessel developed engine malfunctions moments after departure, and stayed adrift off the Savusavu lighthouse.
It was towed back to Savusavu by the landing craft Waimana yesterday, and was expected to have reached by midday.
Passengers were forced to make alternative travel arrangements, and were advised to travel via the Nabouwalu-Natovi route.
