The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has launched an investigation into a fatal maritime collision near Qamea, Taveuni, which claimed two lives.
In a statement, MSAF confirmed the incident occurred on April 9 and described it as tragic.
“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway, with a team deployed to conduct initial assessments,” the authority said.
MSAF said it is working closely with the Fiji Police Force and other stakeholders as inquiries continue.
The authority has also issued a safety reminder to all mariners.
“MSAF takes this opportunity to remind all mariners, boat operators, and vessel owners to exercise extreme caution at sea at all times,” the statement said.
It urged operators to maintain proper lookout, follow safe navigation practices, and ensure vessels are properly certified and operated in line with maritime safety regulations.
