The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has moved to reassure the public following concerns over vessel safety on the Rotuma and Northern routes, confirming that the vessel Ohana, operated by Interlink Shipping, is safe to operate.
MSAF said all vessels must meet strict safety requirements before sailing.
The comments come after videos surfaced on social media showing a leakage being repaired on the ship that was on its way to Rotuma.
“No vessel is permitted to sail without a valid Survey Certificate and Clearance to Sail,” the authority stated.
It confirmed that after inspection of recent repairs, the vessel was approved to operate until the end of the month before undergoing further work.
“Following inspection of repairs carried out, it was approved to operate… after which it will be taken up for slip,” MSAF said.
The authority also rejected claims of selective enforcement.
“MSAF categorically refutes claims of selective enforcement and remains committed to ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew,” it said.
Interlink Shipping said the vessel had undergone repairs and inspection after a minor issue was identified.
“A minor damage was identified… the ship was immediately docked for three days… and cleared by MSAF,” the company said.
It added that safety remains its top priority.
“You can be rest assured Interlink will not compromise safety,” the statement said.
