The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has commenced audits and inspections of ships and shipping companies to verify compliance with the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014.

In a Marine Notice issued this week, Acting Chief Executive Officer Iliesa Batisaresare said the audits are being carried out in line with Marine Notice 06/2025 and have already begun.

“The audit and inspection will be carried out on all ships and their companies and will continue for approximately six months or until all eligible ships and shipping companies are audited, whichever comes first,” Mr Batisaresare said.

MSAF has placed all relevant vessels and operators on notice to submit their Company Safe Ship Management System (SSMS) manuals and standard operating procedures by 31 March 2026.

Shipping companies have also been reminded to comply with Section 40 of the Maritime Transport Act 2013 and Regulation 18 of the Maritime (Safe Ship Management Systems) Regulations 2014, which outline statutory obligations for safe vessel operations and management systems.

Mr Batisaresare said the Authority aims to issue full SSMS certifications to compliant ships and companies once the audit process is completed.

“MSAF wishes to issue full SSMS certifications to ships and relevant companies soon, and cooperation from industry stakeholders is very much appreciated,” he said.

MSAF said the audit programme is part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen maritime safety standards and ensure regulatory compliance across Fiji’s shipping sector.
