Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s proposal for a 20 percent pay cut for all Members of Parliament, Ministers and Assistant Ministers is expected to be deliberated during the parliamentary sitting beginning today.

The proposed reduction forms part of a broader austerity package aimed at easing economic pressures driven by a global fuel crisis and rising international costs.

Under the plan, all 55 parliamentarians would take a 20 percent cut in their remuneration, a move the Prime Minister says is intended to demonstrate leadership “from the top” during a period of national financial uncertainty.

While Cabinet has already endorsed the proposal, it remains subject to formal approval by Parliament during this week’s sitting.
