Former infrastructure minister Jone Usamate has taken responsibility for the delays surrounding the $2.6million water reservoir project at Rara Housing in Lajonia, Labasa, acknowledging his role in the incomplete works.
“We are held accountable for what we do and what we fail to deliver, both during our time in office and even now,” the Opposition MP said.
“The project, which saw the completion of the reservoir last year, remains unfinished due to ongoing work on the water mains needed to supply the reservoir.”
Mr Usamate said he found out the reservoir was largely completed last year after enquiring with the agency concerned.
“However, for a reservoir to function properly, you need the mains that bring water into it.
“I understand that while the reservoir is ready, the current issue is with fixing the mains from Benau to bring water into the reservoir so that Tenia can actually use it.”
He said questions about the delay in completing both the reservoir and mains together were valid.
If anyone claimed they were not accountable, he said, then they should not be in the job.
“As you mentioned, all ministers are accountable for what happens during their term.
“As the minister then, I hold myself accountable — just as the current minister is accountable for ensuring these water projects are completed.”
Once the mains are connected, he believes the community will finally benefit from the long-awaited water supply.
