OPPOSITION Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma has called for urgent reforms to address workplace harassment and improve protections for workers, urging Parliament to strengthen policies and enforcement mechanisms.

In Parliament last week, Mr Sharma said workplace safety extends beyond physical conditions to dignity and respect.

“Harassment in the workplace is not a single act, it exists on a spectrum, and we must name it clearly if we are to fight it,” he said, outlining verbal, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, as well as discrimination.

He warned delays in handling complaints are failing victims.

“Justice that arrives late is justice that has already failed.”

Mr Sharma also raised concerns about limited whistle blower protections.

“We do not have a whistle blower policy, but internally within the ministries they should have a whistle blower policy.”

Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh also highlighted that strengthening our employment relations legislative framework was key.

“Bullying, harassment, discrimination, victimisation and excessive work demands can create harmful environments that erode trust and negatively impact both mental and physical health,” Mr Singh said.

“Prevention must remain at the forefront of our approach.

“We must build systems that stop harm before it occurs. This includes establishing clear workplace policies that prohibit harassment, bullying and misconduct, promoting leadership that models respectful behaviour, and ensuring work safe, confidential reporting mechanisms that support early intervention and are accountable.”
