A motion will be tabled in Parliament today proposing a 20 per cent reduction in salaries for senior political office holders, citing the ongoing fuel crisis.

The motion, listed under Schedule 2 – Motions for Debate, seeks to suspend part of the remuneration of Cabinet Ministers, Assistant Ministers, the Leader of the Opposition and Members of Parliament.

According to the document, the reduction would apply to base salaries as set out in the Gazette Notice No. 516 of 2024 on the Determination of the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji.

“That Parliament makes a determination to suspend the remuneration of the following positions by 20 percent of the base salaries… for the duration of the fuel crisis situation,” the motion states.

The proposal has been brought forward under provisions of the Parliamentary Remunerations Act 2014 and is expected to be debated as part of wider discussions on economic pressures and cost-of-living challenges.

If adopted, the measure would see political leaders take a pay cut during the period of the fuel crisis, as Government signals shared sacrifice amid ongoing economic strain.
