NEW ZEALAND professional boxer Sonny Morini is determined to secure a win, ideally by knockout, when he faces Nadroga’s Kaliova Tahikia in the welterweight division at the 2026 ZEG Boxing Promotion, taking place today at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.

Morini enters the bout with an impressive record of 42 fights, including 32 wins and 10 losses.

His opponent, Tahikia, is still early in his professional career, with six fights under his belt three wins, two losses, and one draw.

Morini is no stranger to fighting in Fiji. He previously defeated Mohammed Ali in November last year to claim the NZPBC Welterweight title, and he now aims to secure his second victory on Fijian soil.

Speaking ahead of the fight, Morini expressed confidence in his preparation.

“My preparation has been good. I’ve been in fight camp for a long time. I’ve just come off another fight and I’m getting straight into the next one,” said Morini.

He acknowledged Tahikia as a strong opponent, describing him as an energetic southpaw, and said he is focused on delivering an entertaining bout.

“I’ve looked at my opponent—he’s a good fighter, a southpaw full of energy. I’m looking forward to putting on a good show and having a good fight with him.

Morini emphasized that his main focus is on his own performance rather than his opponent’s strengths.

“Skills-wise, I don’t focus too much on his abilities. I’m just trying to be the best version of myself going into the fight.

As always, Morini’s expectations remain high.

“I’m always aiming for a knockout that’s the goal. But whether it comes or not, a win is what matters.

He also had a message for Tahikia and local fans.

“I hope he’s well-trained and prepared for a good fight. And to all the supporters—please come out in numbers and support boxing. Let the best man win.”
