The 2025 Westcosie Sports and Fun Day officially opened with a strong message of inclusion, dignity, and equality delivered by Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sashi Kiran, at Penang Sangam Primary School in Rakiraki yesterday.

With more than 600 students and officials with disabilities from seven districts participating under the theme “Champions of Determination,” the Minister praised the efforts of organisers and communities for championing the rights and abilities of children with special needs.

“Each of you is a true champion not just for taking part in today’s events, but for showing us every day what strength, courage, and perseverance look like,” she said.

Minister Kiran acknowledged WESTCOSIE and Ra School for Special Education for their unwavering commitment to promoting inclusion, visibility, and extracurricular opportunities for children with disabilities.

She reminded the crowd that inclusion is not an act of charity, but a fundamental right.

“Today’s event is a beautiful reminder of how far we have come.”

As part of her address, the Minister reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s focus on building a more inclusive society by improving access to public spaces, transport, and digital infrastructure for people with special needs.

She also emphasised the need to eliminate structural and attitudinal barriers that still exist in communities.

The Minister also paid tribute to parents, caregivers, teachers, and supporters who work tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing of children with disabilities.

“You are the unsung heroes. Your patience, love, and commitment are what make this all possible.”

She concluded by encouraging the young athletes to enjoy the moment, support one another, and believe in their own strength.

“You are true Champions of Determination — and we are so proud of you.”

The event continues today with inclusive and adaptive sports activities, promoting joy, unity, and equal opportunity for all.
