More than 1,470 people are currently taking shelter in evacuation centres across Fiji as heavy rain and strong winds continue to impact communities nationwide.
The Fiji National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) confirmed that as of 1pm today, a total of 46 evacuation centres are active across the country’s four divisions.
The Western Division accounts for the majority, with 30 centres in operation, followed by seven in the Eastern Division, six in the Central Division, and three in the Northern Division.
Authorities say approximately 378 households have been displaced, with families seeking refuge as a precaution amid deteriorating weather conditions overnight.
Despite the large number of evacuees, officials anticipate the figure may begin to decline as conditions gradually improve and some communities return home once it is safe to do so.
The NDMO said it continues to work closely with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to ensure timely assistance and essential support reaches affected communities.
Emergency teams remain on standby, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety as unstable weather conditions persist in parts of the country.
