Fiji is looking at bringing in more Bangladeshi nationals to work in the sugar industry, said the Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh.
He announced in Lautoka on Friday a collaboration between the Sugar Cane Growers Council and Anchor Care Migration and Consultancy Ltd. Speaking at the launch of the Grower Management System (GMS) in Lautoka Mr Singh said the two organisations were working on rolling out expressions of interest in engaging foreign workers from Bangladesh.
“The partnership underscores our commitment to supporting farmers with access to labour for the sugar industry, as you all know, currently, we are facing labour shortages in all sectors,” he said.
“Foreign workers will have a crucial role in supporting agricultural activities, particularly during peak seasons of harvesting.
“And later, they will work on sugarcane farms including assisting the agricultural sector.
“By facilitating this collaboration, we not only address the labour shortage faced by our farmers but also foster cultural exchange and mutual learning between our communities.”
