THE Ministry of Youth and Sports will be receiving an increase of $6.7 million to its 2017-2018 Annual Budget allocation which was announced by Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum last night.
The 2016-2017 Sports Ministry allocation was $22.5m.
Khaiyum then added there would be an allocation of $9m for three upcoming major sporting programs.
“First we will continue to fund the engagement of international coaches to improve our competitiveness,” Khaiyum said.
He said the funding would allow Fijian national teams to compete in the upcoming international tournaments such as the 2017 Rugby League World Cup which would be held between October 26 and December 2 and would be co-hosted by Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
This will also see Fijian national teams competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in Australia between April 4 and April 15 and the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu between December 4 and December 15.
“We are also hosting international tournaments in Fiji including the Oceania men’s and women’s 7s tournament and the 2017 World Cadet Table Tennis Challenge.”
