BADMINTON Fiji secretary Abel Caine emphasised the importance of raising awareness about the sport in order to attract more participants and supporters in the country.

The recent success of the 2025 Badminton Fiji Nationals, which saw 70 players compete, highlights the potential for growth in the sport.

Caine acknowledges the challenges faced in promoting badminton in Fiji, noting that it is often perceived as a minor sport with limited appeal.

He believes that there is a lack of understanding about the excitement and intensity of badminton, which is the fastest sport in the world.

“There is a problem we are facing in Badminton Fiji, as we know this is a minor sport, looking at the national’s competition been held, we can see there is a smaller number of people who turnout, and less supporters for the sport.

“There is a huge lack of awareness for the sport, and they don’t know how exciting the sport is, so we need more awareness, so we can make the sport big in the country,” he said.

The recent national tournament, which was held on Sunday at Yat Sen Secondary School, featured players from Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka, with a strong showing from participants who had also competed in the successful annual Secondary Schools tournament.

With over 70 players taking part in the national competition, Caine is encouraged by the passion for badminton in Fiji and urges the community to come out and support the sport.

Caine’s message is clear, there is a growing interest in badminton in Fiji, but more awareness and support are needed to further develop the sport in the country.
