NEW Swire Shipping Fijian Drua head coach Brad Mooar hopes to leave a legacy by helping develop a local coach capable of leading the club when his tenure comes to an end.
Rather than focusing on personal achievements, Mooar said his greatest success would be seeing a Fijian take over the head coaching role in the future.
“I would love to see the next head coach of the Drua to be Fijian, and that would be a huge success for me,” Mooar said.
The former All Blacks assistant coach is determined to build a team culture centred on connection, pride and accountability, while strengthening the bond between the players and the wider Fijian community.
Mooar said he wanted the Drua to be recognised as a caring and united group that proudly represented not only the club but also the people of Fiji.
“We are an extension of our community, of our people. We are connected with our families, with the schools, with the villages and with the people of Fiji,” he said.
He added that his players would be encouraged to remain curious, work hard to improve every day and hold each other accountable to the team’s standards.
On the field, Mooar said the Drua would continue to embrace the exciting Fijian style of rugby while placing equal importance on the less glamorous aspects of the game.
“We will embrace the DNA of the Drua and the DNA of Fijian rugby, but we will also have the rock-hard work ethic to enjoy the grinding parts of the game.
“The set-piece, the defence and the work that no one sees getting done we will celebrate those moments.”
Looking ahead to the end of the 2027 season, Mooar hopes supporters will remember the Drua as a team that was exciting to watch and deeply connected to its fans.
“I hope people will say it has been awesome to come to Drua games and that they have loved every moment of watching the Drua play,” he added.
