FIJI’S national swimmer Matelita Buadromo believes that funding and the provision of information to athletes in different sports is lacking back home and must be strengthened to churn out quality athletes.
In an interview at the Olympic Village this week, Buadromo, who won her heats in the women’s 200m freestyle, said funding was definitely something that would surely benefit swimming and all the other minor sports in the country.
“That is just the one area that we are lacking,” she said.
“Fiji athletes do have a lot of potential and it’s just that (funding is lacking). Not only funding but also information given to the athletes.
“If I didn’t have the information that I know, I probably wouldn’t keep swimming.
“One problem in swimming is the swimmers actually don’t know what they are training for so it is just about information and looking after Fiji athletes.”
Buadromo said all this should be covered under the development section as well.
“But I think now we are actually realising it and it is going to take a lot to sort of get us up there but I mean if we can start, that is something to go with.”
