DESPITE the lack of resources back in the village, Moce Secondary School played an exceptional game to come away with a win in the Fiji Secondary Schools Cricket competition in Suva yesterday.

Moce Secondary defeated Cicia High School by 47 runs in their opening match yesterday at Albert Park.

The team batted first to record a run of 127 in 18.2 overs in the first innings.

Cicia chased but only managed 80 runs in 15.3 overs as Moce held their own under the scorching Suva heat to come away with an impressive win.

Manager Teni Davui said the school’s lack of resources did not dampen the plsyers’ spirits during preparation,

“We are not that well equipped, but we managed to take over this afternoon (yesterday). Back in the village we use plastic bats, some use sticks and the baseball ball for training back in the island.

“It was a bit hard for the boys as some of them are here competing for the first time. During the first batting we saw that some were nervous, and they were not playing up to expectations, but they settled in well,” she said.

Fourteen out of the 56 students enrolled at the school are part of the team with players from Year 9 to 13.

The team arrived in Suva last Thursday.

“For us it was unbelievable because back at home we heard that there were going to face schools that are better than us in cricket, but we believed in God, and we were able to make it successful in round one against Cicia High School,” Davui added.

The team will face Cricket Fiji Invitational team today at 9am at Albert Park pitch one.
