Mixed results in Glasgow

THE Team Fiji bowling team recorded a mixed result in the Commonwealth Games which started in Glasgow, Scotland on Thursday.

Abdul Kalim, Ratish Lal and Daniel Lum On are representing in the men’s triples team while Salanieta Gukivuli, Doreen O’Connor, Radhika Prasad and Litia Tikoisuva are part of the women’s fours team.

The Fiji men’s triple team defeated Cook Islands 14-8 in its opening match before losing to South Africa 16-17 while the pairs side lost to Wales 12-18 in Kelvingrove.

The Fiji women’s fours remained unbeaten on the opening day overcoming India 19-8 and Northern Ireland 18-14.

In the women’s singles, Elizabeth Moceiwai lost to C Wimp of Papua New Guinea 9-21.

In the other events, swimmer Tieri Erasito finished first in her women’s 100 metres butterfly heats while Matelita Buadromo managed the second place in 200m free style heats.

In the men’s 50m butterfly, Meli Malani settled for second while Caroline Puamau and William Clarke finished eighth in the women’s 100m butterfly and the men’s 100m backstroke, respectively.

Weightlifter Seruwaia Malani was placed seventh in the women’s 48 kilograms event.

She lifted a total of 120kg – 55kg snatch and 65kg clean and jerk.

As of yesterday, England topped the medal table with six gold, seven silver and four bronze medals followed by Australia with five gold, three silver and seven bronze medals.
