A PROBE into the financial affairs of the Nasinu Town Council has been launched by its administrators, who have cited “serious financial mismanagement concerns”, allegedly committed by previous administrations.
Council executive chairman Felix Magnus said a forensic audit would examine financial records from 2018 to 2020.
He alleged the disappearance of millions of dollars had compromised essential services for the municipality and its residents.
“Our objective is to finally secure an unqualified opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” Mr Magnus said in a statement issued yesterday.
“Any cases of mismanagement will be referred for further investigation by relevant authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).”
He said the audit, supported by the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Local Government, would focus on cash controls, payroll, asset management, project oversight and regulatory compliance.
The council, he added, had also pledged to keep residents informed of the audit findings.
“We owe it to our community to clean up this mess and to ensure the mistakes of the past are never repeated.”
The audit was ordered following the Auditor General’s reports that had raised red flags regarding alleged misuse of council funds.
