Miri ready for 7s debut

TFL Fijiana debutant Miriama Naiobasali (pictured) is coach Chris Cracknell’s secret weapon as the former England captain says the Naitasiri lass has speed to burn.

Naiobasali said she was ready to take her sporting career to new heights.

She was one of the two new names included in the TFL Fijiana team for the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series to Sao Paulo, Brazil next weekend. The team was named at the Uprising Beach Resort in Pacific Habour yesterday.

After switching from football to rugby last year, the former national football rep said it was her new year’s resolution to make the Fijiana team.

“I set my target to make the team for the first leg of the 2016 series and it has finally paid off,” she said.

Naiobasali said she found rugby more interesting because of the contact nature of the oval ball game.

Fiji Rugby director women’s coaching Chris Cracknell spoke highly of the 18-year-old and said Naiobasali had speed to burn.

“She can play both in the backs and also in the forward,” he said.

“She is the one to watch as we head to Brazil.”

Naiobasali said the big picture for her would be to make the Rio trip and this was her stepping stone.
