Trashbroom equipment will now be installed in three more litter hotspots along the the Suva-Nausori corridor and Nadi after $100,000 was allocated to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for this purpose.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Mosese Bulitavu told Parliament on Monday the equipment was first installed in places such as the Nubukalou Creek in Suva and has proven itself effective.
Trashboom is a waste interception device used to prevent solid waste from reaching the ocean.
“An allocation of $100,000 for trashboom equipment, which are floating barriers that have already proven effective in places like Nubukalou Creek, where over 612kg of waste have been collected since its installation in February this year,” Mr Bulitavu said.
“In the next financial year, trashbooms will be installed in three litter hotspots along the Suva-Nausori corridor and Nadi.”
The Litter Act enforcement also gets a lift, with $48,000 dedicated to cracking down on illegal dumping and littering.
On the international stage, Mr Bulitavu told Parliament that Fiji is preparing to host the 6th Asia-Pacific Environment Ministers Forum (AP6), the first time this event will be held in a Pacific Island country.
“This is not just any meeting, but a historic first for the Pacific, as Fiji will become the first island country to host this prestigious gathering of environment leaders from 41 countries across Asia and the Pacific region,” he said.
“This event will allow Fiji to chair critical high-level deliberations, influence decisions, and support our collective regional voice ahead of the 7th United Nations Environment Assembly, where major global decisions on climate and environment issues are debated and agreed upon.”
Government has allocated $146,000 for the forum, and about $600,000 has been contributed by the Government of Australia.
Fiji is also moving to ratify three pending conventions — the Basel, Rotterdam, and Minamata Conventions — aimed at hazardous waste movement, toxic chemicals, and mercury control.
The ministry has been allocated $11,500 in the 2025-2026 National Budget for this purpose alone.
