The Ministry of Finance has released $275,000 for the construction of a road at Nasealevu, Labasa, according to the Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Mr Rabuka said this project for upgrade of the Nasealevu-Savusavuitaqa access road in the province of Macuata was prioritised for implementation in the 2023-2024 National budget under requisition to incur expenditure.
“Rural roads now come under the Public Works Department (PWD),” he said.
“In cooperation with the Commissioner Northern Division, PWD carried out scoping works on this rural access road in November 2023.”
He said the request for requisition to incur expenditure was submitted in February 2024 to the Ministry of Finance.
“The Finance Ministry has this week approved the release of funds to PWD for the Nasealevu road upgrade,” he said.
The onus, he said, was on successive governments to fulfil the request for development projects to meet the needs of our people.
“The development process for the nation is progressive,” he said.
“Each government has the responsibility to build and improve on the progress made by previous Governments.”
Villagers had complained earlier this week that previous governments had promised to build a road when they allowed for a water catchment on their land.
