The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched an investigation following reports of dead fish discovered in Waimalika Creek.

In a statement, the Ministry confirmed it received the report yesterday from the Turaga ni Koro of Koroyaca Village.

A team of environmental officers from the Western Division Office was immediately dispatched to the site to begin preliminary assessments.

Water samples and deceased fish were collected and sent to accredited laboratories for comprehensive testing.

During the inspection, officials found an empty container of Glyphosate 360 weedicide near the creek.

“While this alone does not constitute conclusive evidence, it raises significant concerns that the waterway may have been intentionally contaminated,” the Ministry said.

Laboratory analysis will include tests for nutrient and chemical parameters in both water and fish tissue samples to determine if chemical poisoning is the cause.

“Community vigilance is a cornerstone of effective environmental stewardship,” said Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Mosese Bulitavu.

“We urge all Fijians to report any signs of pollution or environmental harm immediately. Protecting our natural ecosystems requires a shared commitment from every citizen.”
