THE GOVERNMENT plans to expand municipal boundaries in densely populated areas such as Suva, Nausori, Lautoka and Nasinu.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa said this is because Fijians living on the outskirts of these areas do not have access to basic government services.

“We need to extend the boundaries because we need to supply basic services to people who live in these areas,” he said.

“They are more densely populated now, so it is about time we extend those services to them.

“When we extend boundaries, there are areas we need to look at like the provision of services, the provision of better infrastructure for people to access while they live in these areas.”

Mr Nalumisa said the ministry was also engaged in discussions with the relevant municipalities for these boundary extensions, “so the residents can have access to basic services like garbage collection”.
